Current Works

I regard my practice to be driven primarily by drawing skills. Although, by nature of the materials and techniques, I purposely challenge the notions of categorizing art. For many years now my work has been predominately black and white and I have regarded myself as more of a draftsman in my approach to my work, consciously abandoning more traditional methods of drawing with paper, pencil and charcoal, looking for new skills and methods of presentation.

My technique has been influenced by, and continues to engage with traditional Chinese brushwork; perhaps to be seen as a Western response.

Currently, I am using polyester drafting film, not as the ground or support (although there is always a underlying prepared surface), but as the positive drawn element of the work.  The negative element of the work is drawn with a scalpel, leaving the prepared surface below.  The resultant latticework (lacework, stencil) is then loosely attached within a simple relief framework.

I have found the more exciting part of this work is the chance to draw further marks on the work using the shadows cast from the cut edge of the film.

In recent years, my practice has been challenging the concept of what is 2 dimensional and what is painting; what is drawing or even sculpture.

I am primarily a landscape artist and have no hesitation in incorporating environmental themes into my work.
